The Bible says money answers everything. (Eccl. 10:19) Think about that for a moment. Think about the challenges you face right now and how money could make a difference. How could money help the cause that you want to support? Honestly, money is the easiest thing to give. All you have to do is write a check or hand over some cash and move on with your life. When a child asks or shall I say begs for money how many times have you just pulled out come cash and handed it over just so they could leave you alone? How many times have you dropped money in the Salvation Army bucket or in the church plate and kept moving on with your life? That’s easy. No mental energy required. It’s not to diminish the importance of giving money but to bring awareness of just how easy it is to give.
Giving your time is a bit more challenging in today’s society. This requires your physical presence so you might have to schedule it strategically. If you tend to have a lot going on in your life like running a business, raising a family, or attending school then your time is valuable so you may not have much to give in this area. Giving your time means being at a place where your physical presence is required. This could be volunteering your time for someone or something. Making time to visit or help someone move is a form of giving. Giving your time can be quite challenging but it is doable.
Let me warn you that this can be the most difficult but also the most rewarding. Giving of yourself may not require money but it will require your time. It is possible to give your time without giving of yourself but you cannot give of yourself without giving your time. Let me explain. You can be present physically but not mentally or emotionally. How many times have you gone out to eat and watched other families or couples sit across the table from each other with no eye contact or conversation because they are giving their attention to their cell phone or social media? In a marriage you can give your body physically to the act of sex but it’s not making love until you give yourself mentally and emotionally.
Giving of yourself requires emotional and mental presence. It is the greatest and most selfless form of giving. It is what moves individuals from just giving money to a cause to working tirelessly to support a movement. When you give of yourself what you get in return is priceless!
So remember, there are only three sources to give from. You can give from one or all three but the choice is yours. Giving money is easy. Giving your time is a challenge. Giving of yourself is love.
