My son is a basketball trainer and he often shares stories with me on the progress of some of his clients. He has clients from middle school age through college level and one recurring theme I hear when a new client starts is they want to master the art of dunking without mastering the art of dribbling. In his words, “Dunking is nice and it’s entertaining but it’s not what wins the game. If you can’t master the fundamentals you will only get so far but you’ll never play in the NBA.”
1. See it
If you don’t know where you are going how do you know when you have arrived? You have to see your dream. And I don’t mean in your sleep. You should have a clear picture of your vision for your life. It may not look like anyone else’s and probably won’t but that’s okay. Your dream is unique to you and for you. Close your eyes if you have to and see it. See yourself living the life you want. See your family, your ideal job or business, the perfect home and car, the perfect lifestyle for you. Create a vision board to remind you where you are heading.
2. Believe it
Do you really believe that you can have this life? If you can believe it, you can achieve it. I don’t mean you hope that it happens one day. No, I mean you know in your heart that what you see is not only possible but one day will be.
3. Write it
How many times have we had great thoughts or ideas and did not write them down because we counted on our memory to remind us later only to forget? This is the one area that a lot of people skirt around, even me. Research has shown that there is power in writing down our dreams for our lives because you have a much greater chance of success. It sort of seals it in your mental DNA but also announces it to the universe for support. The first time I tested writing down my dream I was able to check off every accomplishment on my list within two years. Now that’s powerful.
4. Plan it
It’s great to dream. It’s fun creating a vision board. It’s encouraging writing about it. But until you plan it, it is just a dream. This is probably one of the most challenging steps. Set your goals to accomplish your dream. The plan can change as you go along but at least you have a roadmap on how you see your dream becoming a reality. As the God of the universe gives you direction, it may be a little different from the route you planned but you can rest assured that your destination is still in view and likely better than you imagined.
5. Live it
This is the fun part! Take action. This is where you put your plan into action one step at a time. Each goal you set and achieve moves you closer to your ultimate destination of living your dream. It is fun but can also be challenging. As you face some obstacles or learning opportunities along the way, it is important to have an accountability partner to keep you focused and on track. Every goal accomplished strengthens your resolve to live your dream.
Each of these steps is necessary no matter what your dream is. You cannot ignore one and expect to have the same level of success as someone who practices them all. If you want to succeed you have to be all in to win. Like basketball, if you master these fundamentals you can win at any game of life.
